Forsaken is a short film made for the breath-taking wrap-around screens at Outernet London, in the centre of London. Directed by Roland Lane, it was produced by Frameless, animated by Cinesite and supported by Greenpeace and Arts Council England. The work was conceived by director Roland as both an ambitious, immersive digital artwork and also as an impactful call-to-action, highlighting the mass extinction of life on Earth. Inspiration is taken from the remarkable immortal Jellyfish, which is able to regenerate and begin its life cycle over again. Forsaken celebrates its beauty as a representation of the natural world, reimagining the form this remarkable creature could take within the venue space. However, a sombre warning lies within. Forsaken takes the audience through three distinct chapters, the first illustrating the lifecycle of the immortal jellyfish, the second a more abstract interpretation exploring colour and scale before finally, we see the creature’s impending destruction. Inspiration was taken from the colours, light and bioluminescence seen in deep oceans, with ceiling used to reflect the distant, rippling sea surface. Outernet, Europe’s largest digital exhibition space, boasts 4.8m visitors annually. Throughout Forsaken’s 6 week run in January 2024, the audience was estimated at approximately 175k. As a public space, people of all ages were free to walk in, discover and engage with the work and its underlying message; it subsequently received extremely positive reviews and strong reactions across the press and social media. Immersive content is often based around still imagery with animation running on top; Forsaken was far more ambitious than this, being created as an entirely 3-D rendition. In addition, the scale of the venue was enormous, with the work created in 8k resolution across 5 screens at 50 frames per second, effectively meaning an optical resolution of around 21K across all 7 and a half minutes of animation. The technical challenge was immense and render power, combined with a robust workflow and pipeline were essential. Cinesite, the BAFTA award-winning visual effects team worked closely with the technical team at the venue, to ensure maximum impact.
