The goal of this campaign for Cox was to encourage people to break out of isolation and meet their neighbors, to strengthen their sense of community. In the midst of the pandemic, the need for this theme was amplified because of the inherent distance created among people. We followed a unique production approach and didn’t have a script until the project was cast. This gave the stories more specificity and spontaneity. Making sitcom intros for all four families was an essential part of the ad because it would remind people of times when people were closer together and give the message a fun tone. Also, the sequences would communicate a feeling of nostalgia. Everything was designed after getting to know the family, from the music to the costumes, so that it could be tailored to them. This gave the piece an element of realism as the families could be themselves instead of just performers. Since the sitcoms portrayed the original traits of each family member, they became local celebrities in the area after the ad ran. This unusual experience allowed the neighbors to foster a connection without ever meeting and establish something everyone could have in common at an actual barbecue that we threw for them. As for the production, I had the camera crew act as a fly on the wall and film as much as possible to share the rawness of this experience. The audience needed to see the reality of meeting someone new from the family's perspective to make it influential and impactful. I wanted the viewer to leave believing there was value in connecting with their neighbors. The ad showcased a simple act of kindness, which was key in a time of isolation. As a result, it inspired and motivated thousands of people. This powerful message received 2 million views on YouTube and created a wave of positivity in a time of uncertainty.
